If you are considering a home renovation, and have a few questions, you are not alone! Over the years, we have found that a lot of our clients have some of the same questions when it comes to redesigning their home.

Here are the top five questions that we have heard the most over the years:

Q: CAN I AFFORD AN INTERIOR DESIGNER?

A: Absolutely! Industry professionals can actually save you money by having great contacts. Designers work with a lot of trades and suppliers and end up developing relationships with those they trust.

Sometimes, design teams can get their clients a better deal. Or know of superior products that the general public may not know about. Not to mention, an interior designer will often provide sample boards, drawings and act as a facilitator of the project. Eliminating a lot of the stress of executing an efficient home renovation.

Q: WHAT SHOULD MY BUDGET BE?

A: First things first, decide what your priorities are! Do you need to redesign the layout of your home, redo the countertops, replace your flooring, or is it more decor? Once you have the scope of the project, and a rough number in mind, then you are ready to chat with the professionals. Designers are experts at breaking down your number into appropriate amounts, and guide you through the process. They will be able to tell you where to spend, and where to save, to make your money go further

Q: CAN I LIVE IN MY HOME DURING RENOVATIONS?

A: The answer to this varies depending on the scope of the project. It is extremely difficult to live through a full renovation or kitchen reno. Between the dust, mess, inconvenience, and stress – it is much easier to move out during the mass of the construction. If you’re updating your basement, bedroom or a bathroom, you’d likely be fine to stay in your home. However, be prepared for trades showing up at 8 am to work on your home, and the drywall dust (there’s no getting around the dust).

Q: CAN I MIX AND MATCH FINISHES?

A: A concern we get from a lot of clients is whether they can mix and match finishes. The answer is absolutely! The important thing to remember – is that the style of the finishes needs to coordinate to look visually appealing. For example, sleek satin brass cabinet hardware can look incredible with a modern black faucet and stainless appliances, as long as they are in the same style family.

We would also advise that there is more than one location of that finish; if your faucet is black then pull the same black for light fixtures or furniture!

Q: HOW DO I CHOOSE WHAT FINISHES WILL BE BEST?

A: A good designer will always ask a ton of questions, some seeming more personal than others. This helps them put together a list of family life and habits and helps them choose the finishes, fixtures, and furniture that will best stand the test of time.

Do you have pets or small children? You probably don’t want to have a floor that will dent easily, or a sofa that will show fur, and marks from sticky fingers. Designers are great resources for finding finishes that are durable, easily cleaned and still look great. They take into consideration your desired aesthetic, while addressing things you wouldn’t even think to consider.
