In today’s age with shows like Tidying Up with Marie Kondo and Minimalism etc. everyone is starting to become more aware of all the items to which we hold on to in our lives. One main space in your home in which these items can pile up, is the garage. Therefore, when thinking of your next remodel the garage may be the perfect place to start.
These shows highlight methods for clearing out unnecessary items and recommend only holding on to items that are important to you. Which is why it is important to understand that you must enjoy your garage as part of your home and give it the full attention it deserves. As you go through the renovation process try to envision your new garage as a livable and functional space just as your kitchen or living-room would be.
Create Livable Solutions
It is important for you to think about what kind of house you want to live in and how you want to live in it. When looking to remodel make sure you to look at how you will use each individual space and create livable solutions in your home. The garage may be a space you don’t see as a first priority, but in fact, we feel it should be the first on your list. It is a space that is often used as the main point of entry and exit to your home, and therefore if it is cluttered and unappealing, your first and last thoughts of your home will be unpleasant.
Tackling a garage renovation can revolutionize the way you approach organization within your home and solve difficult storage, or even living, issues. Take, for example, our Cochrane renovation project Bearspaw Summit, where we were able to create an overhead garage living space to serve as additional quarters for guests. The open concept design allows for breathability and functionality in the unique tiny space. Equipped with its own kitchenette, bathroom, dining and living area, as well as an open concept bedroom, this reno supports both style and functional living.
Start where you feel comfortable
The garage is often a place in which you may hold on to some of your most prized possessions, such as collectable cars, sports memorabilia, etc. That being said, it can also be a space in which you place things you no longer want or need. Therefore, it is important that you create a space that holds only the things that are necessary for you and bring you joy.
It is clear to see what sparks joy for our Bearspaw Summit client, which is why in this design we added windows and a glass door to the interior garage walls to add a sense of ownership and pride to the objects within. Each memorabilia item was also placed in its own frame to give each item a sense of purpose and place.
As you take note of the teachings of KonMari, and Minimalism it is logical that luxury garages become the natural next renovation step. A carefully designed garage can go a long way in helping you declutter to bring joy into your life and envision how you want to live.
